Robot vacuums with self-cleaning docks

A dock does four separate jobs and the cheap ones do fewer. The one that actually changes your week is the drying.

A full station washes the mop pad, dries it with warm air, empties the dustbin into a sealed bag and refills the robot's water tank. Cheaper docks do one or two of those. Heated drying is the one that matters most day to day, because it is what stops the pad going musty.

The dock is the reason people actually use the mop. Washing a pad by hand after every run is the job that quietly stops happening in week three, and once it stops the mop is worse than nothing because it is spreading rather than lifting.

The four jobs

Compiled from the manufacturers’ own published material on 2026-09-01. We have not measured any of these figures ourselves — see how we pick. Found an error? Tell us and we will correct it.

Washing, and the temperature

Hot water lifts grease in a way cold water does not, which matters because kitchen floors are where most of the mopping happens. ECOVACS states 167F on the X8 Pro Omni, Dreame states 158F on the X40 Ultra and 149F on the L40 Ultra. Roborock states hot water washing on the Curv line without publishing a temperature. Where a dock washes in cold water, the pad comes out rinsed rather than clean.

Drying, which is the underrated one

A washed pad left damp in an enclosed plastic housing grows the same bacteria that make a forgotten dishcloth smell, and it takes a few days in a humid house. Warm-air drying prevents it. A dock that washes but does not dry will produce a musty pad, and no amount of washing fixes it once it has started — see why the mop smells musty.

Emptying

Intervals of 60 to 100 days are quoted. Dreame states 100 days on a 3.2L bag for the X50 Ultra. Halve any of those figures in a house with a shedding animal — the reasoning is on self-emptying versus a manual bin.

Refilling and dosing

On-board water tanks are small: eufy states 80ml in the robot against a 3L tank in the station. On any floor larger than a flat, the refill is what allows the run to finish. Automatic solution dosing, which ECOVACS states on the X8 Pro Omni, also removes the most common way people damage a mop pump — putting household floor cleaner in a tank designed for water.

How we picked

Criteria first, products second. These are the things we ranked on, stated before anything is recommended.

  • Whether the dock washes the pad at all, and at what stated temperature.
  • Whether it dries the pad with warm air, which is what prevents the musty smell.
  • Self-empty interval and bag capacity, where the maker publishes them.
  • Whether it refills the robot's tank and doses solution automatically.
  • Physical footprint, because a station is a piece of furniture and people underestimate it.

What we did not do: test any of these machines. We do not own one, we do not have a lab, and nothing on this page is written as though we did. The full method.

Top pick

ECOVACS DEEBOT X8 PRO OMNI

Mopping that rinses as it goes

A rotating roller mop that washes itself continuously while it cleans, instead of pushing one increasingly dirty pad around the house.

Published specifications

Max climb height
20mm with the mop attachedECOVACS states the condition alongside the figure, which is unusual and useful — a mop-combo's climb is not the same as a bare chassis's.Source: ECOVACS DEEBOT X8 PRO OMNI product page — obstacle crossing (retrieved 2026-09-01)
Navigation

Dock
Self-emptying with 167F hot-water mop washing, hot-air drying and auto solution dosingSource: ECOVACS DEEBOT X8 PRO OMNI product page — station (retrieved 2026-09-01)

What it does well

  • Roller mop self-washes during the run rather than only at the dock
  • Publishes a threshold figure and states the condition (with mop attached)
  • Stated 291 minutes of runtime in silent mode

What it does not

  • 20mm climb is among the lowest published figures here
  • 0.22L on-board bin is small, so it leans hard on the dock

Who it is for

Hard floors that actually get dirty — kitchens, entryways, homes with dogs.

Skip it if

Your sills are tall. ECOVACS publishes 20mm with the mop attached, which is at the low end of this table.

Pick 2

Roborock Qrevo CurvX

Thick carpet and tall sills in one house

The highest published suction figure here paired with the highest published mop lift, which is the combination a mixed-floor home actually needs.

Published specifications

Stated runtime
Not publishedNot stated on the Roborock series page.
Dustbin
Not publishedNot stated on the Roborock series page.

What it does well

  • 17mm mop lift is the highest published figure in this comparison
  • 80mm (3.14in) body clears furniture most flagships cannot
  • Retracting LiDAR turret, so the mast is not the height limit

What it does not

  • 22,000 Pa is a peak figure, not what it sustains across a room
  • Flagship pricing — the plain Curv covers the same published thresholds for less

Who it is for

Homes with deep carpet in some rooms and hard floors in others, where the mop has to get properly out of the way.

Skip it if

You have no carpet at all. Most of the premium on this model is carpet-specific hardware.

Pick 3

Dreame X40 Ultra

Removable mop pads

The mop pads come off entirely rather than just lifting, which is the only version of mop lifting that guarantees a dry carpet.

Published specifications

Max climb height
22mm (0.87in)Stated by Dreame in its own model comparison, not on the product listing.Source: Dreame model comparison — L40 Ultra Gen 2 vs L40s Ultra, obstacle climbing height (retrieved 2026-09-01)
Mop lift
Removable, plus a stated 10.5mm raiseDreame quotes the height difference before and after mop lifting as 10.5mm; the pads can also be dropped at the dock entirely.Source: Dreame model comparison — mop lifting height difference (retrieved 2026-09-01)
Dock
Self-emptying with 158F mop and washboard self-cleaning, auto refillSource: Dreame X40 Ultra dock — manufacturer listing on Amazon.com (retrieved 2026-09-01)

What it does well

  • Mops detach at the dock instead of riding along raised
  • Stated 198 minutes of runtime
  • 12,000 Pa stated peak suction

What it does not

  • 22mm climb is mid-pack and well below the L40s and X50
  • Large dock footprint for the mop-washing hardware

Who it is for

Mixed carpet and hard floor where you want the mop gone, not raised.

Skip it if

Your thresholds are tall. Dreame's own comparison puts this generation's obstacle climbing at 22mm.

  • Removable mop and extendable side brush
  • Solution auto-refill

What it does not

  • No published obstacle climbing figure
  • No published mop-lift height

Who it is for

Hard floors that need genuine washing rather than a damp wipe.

Skip it if

You need a published climb height — Dreame does not state one for this model.

What we would skip, and why

Skip this one

Shark Matrix Plus 2-in-1

Its base self-empties, and for a vacuum that is enough. It does not wash the pad and it does not dry it, which on this page is the whole point. If you are shopping for a self-cleaning dock, this is a self-emptying dock with a mop attached and it should be compared against cheaper vacuum-only robots instead.

Questions people actually ask

+ What does a self-cleaning dock actually do?

Up to four things: washes the mop pad, dries it with warm air, empties the dustbin into a bag, and refills the robot's water tank. Cheaper docks do fewer. Check which of the four you are actually buying.

+ Is hot water mop washing worth it?

On kitchen floors, yes — hot water lifts grease that cold water leaves behind. Stated temperatures range from 149F to 167F on the models that publish one, and several publish none.

+ Do I still need to clean the dock?

Yes. The wash tray collects the material the pad gives up, and it needs rinsing periodically — weekly is realistic in a busy house. A dock that cleans the robot does not clean itself.

+ How big is a robot vacuum dock?

A full washing station is roughly the size of a small bin and needs clearance on three sides. Measure the spot before you buy; it is the most common regret and the easiest to prevent.
