How to stop the mop smelling musty

It is not your floor. It is a damp pad in a warm plastic box, doing exactly what a forgotten dishcloth does.

A musty robot mop is a damp pad drying slowly inside an enclosed dock. The bacteria responsible are the same ones that make a forgotten dishcloth smell, and they establish in a few days in a humid house. Heated drying prevents it. Without heated drying, take the pad out after every run.

People diagnose this as a dirty floor or a failing filter and neither is right. It is a moisture problem, and once you see it that way both the fix and the prevention are obvious.

The fix, if it already smells

  1. Take the pads off and wash them properly. Hot water, and a machine wash if the manufacturer allows it. A pad that has gone sour will not be rescued by another dock cycle at the temperature that let it happen.
  2. Dry them completely, off the robot. In open air, not in the dock. If they still smell when fully dry, replace them — pads are cheap and a sour pad reinfects the dock.
  3. Clean the wash tray in the dock. This is the step everyone skips. It collects everything the pad gives up and it is a warm, wet plastic reservoir. Rinse it, wipe it, dry it.
  4. Empty and rinse the dirty-water tank. Left standing, it is the actual source in many cases.
  5. Leave the dock lid open for a few hours if it has one, so the housing itself dries.

Preventing it

  • Heated drying is the real prevention. A dock with warm-air drying takes the pad from wet to dry quickly enough that nothing establishes. This is the feature to prioritize if you have had the problem before — see self-cleaning docks.
  • Empty the dirty-water tank after every run, not when it is full. Standing dirty water is the second source after the pad.
  • Rinse the wash tray weekly. Two minutes.
  • Use only the solution the maker specifies. Household floor cleaner leaves a residue that feeds exactly what you are trying to prevent, and foams enough to damage the pump.
  • If your dock does not dry, pull the pads off after each run and hang them. It is annoying, and it is the difference between pads that last months and pads that go sour in a fortnight.

Why humid houses have it worse

Drying is evaporation, and evaporation slows as the surrounding air gets more humid. In a damp house, or in a bathroom or utility room where docks often end up, a pad that would dry overnight elsewhere stays damp for days. If your dock is in a humid room and does not have heated drying, moving it is a genuine fix rather than a workaround.

Top pick

ECOVACS DEEBOT X8 PRO OMNI

Mopping that rinses as it goes

A rotating roller mop that washes itself continuously while it cleans, instead of pushing one increasingly dirty pad around the house.

What it does well

  • Roller mop self-washes during the run rather than only at the dock
  • Publishes a threshold figure and states the condition (with mop attached)
  • Stated 291 minutes of runtime in silent mode

What it does not

  • 20mm climb is among the lowest published figures here
  • 0.22L on-board bin is small, so it leans hard on the dock

Who it is for

Hard floors that actually get dirty — kitchens, entryways, homes with dogs.

Skip it if

Your sills are tall. ECOVACS publishes 20mm with the mop attached, which is at the low end of this table.

Pick 2

Dreame X40 Ultra

Removable mop pads

The mop pads come off entirely rather than just lifting, which is the only version of mop lifting that guarantees a dry carpet.

Published specifications

Max climb height

Mop lift
Removable, plus a stated 10.5mm raiseDreame quotes the height difference before and after mop lifting as 10.5mm; the pads can also be dropped at the dock entirely.Source: Dreame model comparison — mop lifting height difference (retrieved 2026-09-01)
Dock
Self-emptying with 158F mop and washboard self-cleaning, auto refillSource: Dreame X40 Ultra dock — manufacturer listing on Amazon.com (retrieved 2026-09-01)

What it does well

  • Mops detach at the dock instead of riding along raised
  • Stated 198 minutes of runtime
  • 12,000 Pa stated peak suction

What it does not

  • 22mm climb is mid-pack and well below the L40s and X50
  • Large dock footprint for the mop-washing hardware

Who it is for

Mixed carpet and hard floor where you want the mop gone, not raised.

Skip it if

Your thresholds are tall. Dreame's own comparison puts this generation's obstacle climbing at 22mm.

Questions people actually ask

+ Why does my robot vacuum mop smell?

A damp pad drying slowly in an enclosed dock, plus standing dirty water in the tank. It is a moisture problem rather than a cleaning one, and it establishes within days in a humid house.

+ How do I stop a robot vacuum from smelling?

Wash the pads properly in hot water and dry them off the robot, rinse the dock's wash tray, and empty the dirty-water tank after every run rather than when it is full. Then buy heated drying next time.

+ Can I put disinfectant or vinegar in the water tank?

Only what the manufacturer specifies. Vinegar attacks seals and some floor finishes; household cleaners foam and foam damages pumps. If the dock doses solution automatically, use that dosing rather than adding anything yourself.

+ How often should I replace mop pads?

When they stop coming out of the wash looking clean, or when the fibers have matted flat, or when they smell after a proper wash and full dry. Calendar advice is less useful than any of those three signals.
