Are robot vacuums worth it?

Worth it if you meet the conditions, and genuinely not if you do not. Here are the conditions.

Worth it if you have mostly hard floors or medium carpet, floors clear enough to run without tidying first, and a household that generates mess steadily — pets, children, a busy hallway. Less so in a small, tidy, deeply carpeted flat where a stick vacuum does the job in ten minutes.

The honest answer to this question is conditional, and most of the internet gives you a yes because a yes converts better. The conditions are specific enough to check against your own house in a couple of minutes.

The five conditions

1. Your floors are mostly hard, or carpet under about 20mm

Hard floors are the easy case and the strongest argument. Medium carpet works well. Deep pile is where robots struggle physically rather than electrically, and the reasons are on high-pile carpet. If most of your home is shag, the answer is closer to no.

2. Your floors are usually clear

A robot cleans the floor it can reach. In a house with cables, toys, shoes and a laundry pile it will either route around them, leaving gaps, or eat one. Obstacle avoidance has improved a lot and it is not magic — see obstacle avoidance. If you would have to tidy before every run, the robot has not saved you the job.

3. The mess is steady rather than occasional

The robot's advantage is frequency, not power. An upright cleans deeper in one pass; a robot cleans shallower every day. That trade is excellent against a shedding dog, a toddler and a hallway that collects grit, and it is a poor trade in a tidy one-bedroom flat that needs a proper clean once a week and nothing in between.

4. You can live with the dock

A full washing station is a piece of furniture and needs a wall with clearance. This is the most common post-purchase regret in the category. Measure the space first — the specifics are on self-cleaning docks.

5. Your thresholds are not too tall

This is the condition nobody checks and the one that produces the most disappointment. If your door sills are over about 20mm you are shopping in a much smaller pool than the roundups suggest, and if they are over 40mm nothing currently sold will reliably cross them. Measure before you buy: the threshold climb table.

What a robot vacuum genuinely will not do

  • Stairs. Not one model, at any price. If stairs are a large part of the job, you still need a second machine.
  • Deep-clean carpet. It maintains; it does not restore. A dirty carpet needs an upright or a washer first, and then the robot keeps it there.
  • Tidy up. It cleans floors. Anything on the floor is an obstacle, not a target.
  • Replace a proper clean entirely. Corners, edges above floor level, upholstery and the tops of things are all outside its job.

How much to spend

The single biggest jump in usefulness is from a bump-and-turn robot to a mapped one, and it happens well below the flagship prices. A mapped robot with an anti-tangle brush covers most households properly. Above that you are buying mopping sophistication, dock features and climb height — all real, none of them the difference between working and not.
