Cheap robot vacuums used to be genuinely bad. A budget machine meant a bump-and-turn disc that wandered a room at random, wound hair around its brush within a fortnight, and got stuck under the same chair every afternoon until you gave up and put it in a cupboard.

No map. A bump-and-turn robot cleans by pattern rather than plan. It is genuinely useful in one room and frustrating across a floor, because there is no room selection, no no-go zones and no resume after charging. Every run misses somewhere different.

A self-emptying dock. The bin stops being the limiting factor on whether the robot finishes the floor. This matters far more in a shedding household than the marketing implies, because hair fills a small bin fast.
A washing dock. The mop pad gets rinsed and dried for you. This is the expensive rung, it is the last one to arrive, and it is the one you can most comfortably skip if your floors are mostly carpet.
Almost everything that gets sold as a budget robot sits on rung one or rung two. The whole argument of this page is that rung two is worth reaching for and rung one is only worth buying deliberately.
Mapping is the upgrade, not suction
If you take one thing from this page, take this. The specification that separates a cheap robot you keep using from a cheap robot you put away is whether it builds a map, and it is almost never the specification the listing leads with.
A mapped robot cleans in a methodical pattern, knows which rooms it has done, returns to the dock when the battery runs low and resumes where it stopped. An unmapped one drives until it has probably covered enough. On open hard floor the difference is visible: you can see the patches an unmapped robot missed, and you cannot tell it to go back to them.
Mapping also unlocks the settings that fix most ownership complaints. A no-go zone is the answer to a rug fringe, to a cable nest, to a litter tray and to the one doorway that traps the robot every run. None of those fixes exist on a machine with no map, which is why the same problems get reported as faults on cheap robots and as solved on cheap-but-mapped ones.
The second thing to check: does the maker publish a brush?
Hair is the failure mode that ends most robot vacuum relationships, and it is a brush problem rather than a suction problem. A brush wound solid with hair stops turning freely, and what the owner experiences is a robot that has stopped picking things up.
Anti-tangle brush hardware used to be a flagship feature. It is not any more, and the budget models that have it are meaningfully better long-term buys than the ones that do not. The catch is that some makers describe their brush in detail and others say nothing at all, which tells you something in itself.

Read the blanks as carefully as the entries. Roborock describes the anti-tangle comb on its cheapest mapped model and then publishes nothing about the brush on the Qrevo S. Shark names a self-cleaning brushroll without saying what it is made of. What you genuinely give up down here
A budget roundup that only lists wins is not a budget roundup. These are the real compromises, and none of them is a reason not to buy — they are things to know before you are surprised by them.
Published specifications get thinner. The cheaper the model, the more of its spec sheet is missing. Several models here publish no climb height, no mop lift and no runtime. That is not a defect in the machine, but it does mean you cannot check it against your own floors before buying.
Mopping is a pad, not a system. At this end a mop is a damp cloth dragged behind the robot with a water tank feeding it. It will take a light film off a kitchen floor. It will not scrub, and you will be rinsing the pad yourself.
Obstacle avoidance is basic or absent. Camera-based recognition is a flagship feature. Down here the robot mostly finds obstacles by driving into them, so the floor needs to be tidy before a run rather than after it.
Docks do fewer jobs. A self-empty base is common; a base that also washes and dries a mop pad is the expensive rung and mostly is not here.

What we would not spend budget money on
Two things, and both are common ways to overpay at the bottom of the market.
The first is a large suction figure on an unmapped robot. Pascal ratings are not standardized between manufacturers, so a big number from an unfamiliar brand tells you very little, and it tells you nothing at all about whether the machine will cover your floor methodically. A four-figure pascal claim on a robot with no map is the clearest example in this category of buying a specification instead of a capability.
The second is a discounted flagship whose dock has been removed. Manufacturers sell trims of the same machine at different prices, and the cheap trim usually loses the dock rather than the cleaning hardware. That can be an excellent buy. What makes it a bad one is when the trim also drops the published figures — the same body, the same marketing language, and suddenly no stated climb height or mop lift. If you are buying on specification, buy the trim that still has one.
Making a cheap robot last
The gap between a budget robot that lasts four years and one that dies in eighteen months is almost entirely maintenance, and the maintenance is ten minutes a month.
Clear the main brush and both end caps. Hair packs into the bearing where you cannot see it, and that is what makes a motor labor and eventually fail.
Wipe the cliff sensors. Dust on them causes most of the behavior people report as a mapping fault, including a robot that refuses to cross a perfectly flat floor.
Pull the hair out of the front caster. A caster that drags instead of rolling turns a doorway the robot cleared last month into one it cannot.
Tap out the filter, and replace it when tapping stops working. A clogged filter looks exactly like weak suction from the outside.
Empty the bin before it is full, particularly with a shedding animal, since hair blocks the intake before the bin is technically full.
