Replace a mop pad when it comes out of a wash still stained, when the fibers have matted flat, or when it still smells after a full wash and dry. Those three signals beat any calendar interval, because pad life depends almost entirely on whether your dock washes in hot water and dries afterward.
A worn brush announces itself: pickup drops and you notice. A worn mop pad does not. It keeps making the floor wet, so it looks like it is working, while it has actually stopped lifting anything and started redistributing it. That is why this is worth a page rather than a line in a manual.
The three signals
It comes out of the wash still stained. A pad that goes through a full dock cycle and emerges discolored has fibers that are permanently loaded. It will not get cleaner and it is now carrying that load back to the floor.
The fibers have matted flat. Microfiber lifts because thousands of split fibers stand proud and grab. Run a hand across a new pad and a tired one and the difference is unmistakable. A flattened pad is a smooth cloth, and a smooth cloth pushes water around.
It smells after a full wash and a full dry. Not damp-smelling straight out of the dock, which is normal — smelling once genuinely dry. That means bacteria are established in the fiber structure, and washing has already failed to shift them. See why the mop smells musty for how it gets there.
Any one of the three is enough. Manufacturers publish suggested intervals in the manual and those are a reasonable prompt to look, but they cannot know whether your dock washes at 167F or whether you have been rinsing pads in the sink. Treat the interval as a reminder to inspect, not as an instruction to buy.
What kills pads early
Cold washing. A cold rinse removes loose dirt and leaves grease. On a kitchen floor that is most of what the pad picked up, so it accumulates and the fibers load up over weeks.
No drying. A pad left damp in an enclosed dock grows the bacteria that cause the smell, and once established they are in the fiber structure rather than on it.
Grit. Abrasive material — tracked-in sand, cat litter — cuts and flattens fiber every pass. Litter households go through pads noticeably faster; see cat litter.
Household floor cleaner in the tank. Beyond the risk to the pump, most floor cleaners leave a residue that stiffens fiber and attracts more soil. Use only what the manufacturer specifies, or a dock that doses it for you.
Accidents. A pad that has been through a pet accident is not worth rescuing at any price. Replace it, and see pet accidents for the rest of that cleanup.

Read that table as a running-cost table as much as a feature table. A dock that states a hot wash and a drying cycle is doing the two things that keep fiber alive; a dock that only self-empties is leaving the pad to you. That is the same argument made at more length on self-cleaning docks.
Genuine or third-party?
Mop pads are one of the components where reputable third-party equivalents are genuinely fine and considerably cheaper. Unlike a main brush, a pad has no bearing, no drive and no critical tolerance — it needs to be the right shape, the right thickness and to attach securely.
Two things to check. Thickness matters more than it sounds, because the pad thickness is part of the geometry the mop-lift figure assumes — a noticeably thicker pad eats into the clearance the robot has over your carpet. And the attachment has to be the same system, whether that is hook-and-loop, a clip or a magnetic plate; a pad that detaches mid-run gets pushed around the floor by the robot.
Roller mops are a different consumable
If your machine uses a roller rather than pads, the wear item is the roller sleeve and the scraper that cleans it. Rollers generally last longer than flat pads because they are continuously rinsed during the run rather than only at the dock, but the scraper needs clearing periodically or the rinse stops working and the roller loads up anyway. Buy the dock, not the pad. The three picks below all state a hot wash, and two of them state a drying cycle — which between them do more for how long a pad lasts than any difference in the pad itself.

Not a bad machine, and we recommend it elsewhere for its HEPA base. On this page it is the wrong buy for a mechanical reason: it has no mop washing at all. Sonic mopping is a vibrating pad fed from a tank, and the pad is rinsed by you, when you remember. A pad that is hand-rinsed after some runs and not others matts and stains faster than one that goes through a hot wash and a dry cycle every time, so you will be replacing pads more often than an owner of a washing-dock machine, not less.
