No robot vacuum can clean up a pet accident, and one that drives through it spreads the mess across every room it visits afterward. The only feature that helps is obstacle avoidance that recognizes waste specifically, and no manufacturer offers a guarantee. Plan around avoidance and containment, not cleanup.
Every other obstacle-avoidance failure on this site costs you a tangled brush and an unpleasant ten minutes. This one is different in kind. A robot that drives through a mess does not stop at the mess: it carries it on the wheels, the brush and the mop pad through the rest of the run, and what began as one spot on one floor becomes a job that ends with a bucket and a ruined brush.
That asymmetry is why this page exists as a separate thing from general obstacle avoidance. For every other object the question is how often the robot gets it right. For this one the question is what happens the one time it does not.
What the hardware can actually do
Avoidance runs on separate hardware from mapping, usually a forward-facing camera with object recognition, sometimes paired with a structured-light projector that gives the robot a depth reading of what is ahead. Recognition is the part that matters here: a depth sensor knows something is on the floor, but only a recognition model has any chance of knowing what.
iRobot markets the j9 series specifically on avoiding pet waste, which is an unusual thing to put in the headline and a reasonable thing to buy on if you have a puppy or an older dog. Roborock states that its Reactive AI recognizes 108 object types on the Curv line. Those are claims about a recognition model rather than promises about your hallway, and we have not tested either. What we can tell you is which makers describe the hardware and which do not.

Note the last row. A robot with no recognition hardware at all finds obstacles by driving into them, which in this specific case is the worst possible design. That is not a criticism of a cheap machine doing what it was built to do — it is a reason not to run one unattended in a house with a dog that has accidents.
Two conditions where avoidance is least likely to help
Darkness. Camera-based recognition needs light. Most people schedule a run for when the house is empty, which is often when the blinds are shut. If you have any reason to worry, schedule the run for daylight and open a blind, or do not schedule it unattended at all.
Liquid. A recognition model trained on solid objects has far less to work with on a wet patch, and a thin film on a hard floor presents almost no profile to a depth sensor. Urine is the harder case and the one people ask about most.
If it already happened
Stop the robot from the app before you do anything else, so it does not return to the dock and contaminate that too. Then work in this order.
Take the robot outside or to a hard surface you can clean. Do not carry it across carpet.
Remove the bin, the filter, the main brush, the side brush and any mop pad. Bins and brushes are usually washable; filters usually are not, and a contaminated filter is a replacement rather than a rescue. Check the manual for which of yours is which.
Clean the wheels and the caster. These are what tracked the mess through the house and they are the parts people forget.
Use an enzymatic cleaner on the floor, not a general disinfectant. Enzyme cleaners break down the proteins that cause the lingering smell; a disinfectant masks it and a dog will keep returning to the same spot.
Check the dock. If the robot returned before you caught it, the dock's tray and the charging contacts need attention too.
Replace the mop pad if it went through it. A pad that has been through an accident is not worth saving — see mop pad replacement.
Do not run the robot again until the brush turns freely and the filter is dry. Refitting a damp filter is how a machine ends up smelling permanently.
What the mop changes
On a vacuum-only robot the mess gets tracked. On a mop combo it gets tracked and spread with water, which is worse. If accidents are a live risk in your house, that is an argument for running vacuum-only until the risk passes — a puppy being house-trained, or an older dog whose control is going.

One honest limit to close on: none of this is a guarantee, and no source that gives you one is being straight with you. Avoidance materially reduces the risk.
