Mop combo, or two separate machines?

The answer depends on one thing: how much of your floor is carpet. Everything else is detail.

If most of your floor is hard, buy one combo — the docks have got good enough that the old advice to separate them is out of date. If most of it is carpet, a combo carries a mop around a house that barely needs one, and a vacuum-only robot plus a cordless hard-floor mop is cheaper and works better.

This used to be an easy call in the other direction. Early combos dragged a damp cloth behind the vacuum and did neither job well. That is no longer true, and advice written before the current generation of washing docks is simply out of date.

The case for one combo

  • One machine, one dock, one app. Two robots means two charging stations taking wall space and two sets of consumables.
  • Vacuum and mop in one pass. On a mostly hard floor this halves the time the machine is running and the noise it makes.
  • The dock does the unpleasant part. Washing and drying a mop pad is the job people stop doing, which is why a self-cleaning dock is what actually makes a mop get used.
  • Mop lift has got good. Published lifts up to 17mm, and iRobot's retracting arm, mean crossing a rug is no longer an automatic disaster.

The case for two machines

  • Carpet dominates. If four rooms out of five are carpeted, the mop is dead weight on nearly every run and the lift mechanism is one more thing to fail.
  • Deep pile. No published mop lift clears a shag. A vacuum-only robot has no wet pad to worry about at all.
  • You want real scrubbing. A dedicated hard-floor washer applies more water and more pressure than any robot, and on a tiled kitchen that difference is visible.
  • Budget. A capable vacuum-only robot plus a decent cordless mop often costs less than a flagship combo and covers both jobs properly.

Measure your deepest carpet before you compare anything else. If your pile is deeper than the published lift on the models you are considering, a combo will either damp your carpet or spend every run routing around it, and the second is not the machine you thought you were buying.

A third option: the combo with a handheld

Questions people actually ask

+ Robot vacuum mop combo or separate?

Combo for a mostly hard-floor home. Separate machines when carpet dominates, when your pile is deeper than any published mop lift, or when you want a hard-floor washer that genuinely scrubs.

+ Do robot mops actually clean, or just spread dirt?

A pad that is never rinsed spreads dirt by the far end of a large floor. That is exactly what the washing docks and the roller mops address, and it is the main thing separating a current combo from one bought five years ago.

+ Can a robot vacuum mop and vacuum at the same time?

Most do, with the mop trailing the brush. The exception is carpet, where the robot either lifts the pad, drops it at the dock first, or avoids the area.

+ Is a robot vacuum with a handheld worth it?

If stairs are your problem, yes — no robot climbs them, so a shared station with a stick vacuum is the only integrated answer. If you already own a good stick vacuum you are paying for a second one.
