A stuck brush is nearly always hair wound around the axle, packed into the end caps where it is invisible. The robot keeps driving the motor, the roller does not turn freely, and pickup collapses. Clearing it takes ten minutes and costs nothing. Left alone, it is what eventually kills the brush motor.
People report this as weak suction, because that is what it looks like from above. The robot runs its full cycle, sounds normal, and leaves visible debris behind. Checking the brush is the first thing to do whenever pickup drops, and it resolves more of these complaints than any other single action.
Clearing it, without damaging anything
Power the robot off. Not docked and idle — off. A brush that starts turning with your fingers in it is a genuinely bad afternoon.
Turn it over and release the brush guard. Usually one or two tabs. It lifts off as a piece.
Lift the roller out and take the end cap off. This is the step almost everyone skips, and it is where the damage lives. The wrap that stops a brush turning is around the axle inside the bearing housing, not in the middle where you can see it.
Cut along the groove, not across the roller. Most brushes have a molded channel to guide a blade. Follow it. Cutting across the fins damages the part you are trying to save.
Pull the cut hair off in one piece, then clear both bearing housings with a fingernail or tweezers. Spin the roller by hand — it should turn freely with no resistance and no grinding.
Check the side brush too. It is a thin spinning arm with nothing to divert hair from its hub, and it winds worse than the main brush on most designs.
Refit and test. If the roller still will not turn freely, something rigid is in the housing — go to the next section.
Why it happens, and why some machines barely do it
Hair wraps because a rotating cylinder with anything grippy on it will collect strands and pull them toward the ends. Long human hair is the worst case because a single strand can be longer than the roller is wide, so it completes several wraps before it stops. Once a wrap reaches the bearing it is out of reach of any self-cleaning mechanism and it stays.
Anti-tangle designs attack exactly that. A spiral blade, a fixed comb sitting against the roller, or a two-roller geometry that pushes strands toward the end caps rather than letting them settle. Where a maker publishes what its brush actually is, we have recorded it.

When the brush is the problem rather than the hair
A brush wears out. The honest signals are that the fins have gone soft and rounded, that there is a permanent flat spot, or that the roller has visible play in the bearing when you rock it. At that point clearing it stops restoring performance and a replacement does.
Fit matters more than material when buying one: a roller at slightly the wrong diameter either does not reach the floor or drags. The running-cost picture, including which designs mean you buy fewer of these, is on replacement parts and running costs.
The maintenance interval that actually prevents it
Monthly, in a house with a shedding animal or anyone with long hair. Fortnightly if both. Take the end caps off every time rather than only clearing what you can see — the visible wrap is not the one that damages the machine.

Buy a published anti-tangle design. For someone landing on this page it is the wrong replacement, because Shark names a self-cleaning brushroll and never describes what it is made of or what makes it self-cleaning — and brush construction is the entire subject here. If a wound brush is the problem you are trying not to repeat, buy from a maker that states what the brush actually is.
