Roomba alternatives

Most people searching this have already decided. The useful question is not whether to leave iRobot but which machine replaces the one you were about to buy, and what you lose on the way out.

By Scooter M.Published
A modern living room opening onto a contemporary kitchen

Disclosure — some links on this page go to Amazon, and we earn a commission if you buy through them. It costs you nothing extra and it does not change what we recommend or in what order. The full disclosure.

For most people leaving iRobot, the Roborock Q7 M5+ replaces an entry Roomba for less money while publishing far more, and the Roborock Qrevo CurvX replaces a flagship Combo j9+ with a published 40mm climb and 17mm mop lift. The one thing no rival matches is iRobot's sealed allergen bag.

If you have landed here you have usually already made the decision, and a page that spends six paragraphs re-litigating whether Roomba is any good is wasting your time. We have that page - is a Roomba worth it - and this is not it. This one assumes you are leaving and answers the harder question: leaving for what?

The reason the alternatives look so strong on paper is specific and worth understanding. iRobot publishes almost nothing measurable. Of the five Roombas we cover, exactly one states a suction figure in pascals. The other four describe suction as a multiple of an earlier Roomba - seventy times, four times, one hundred percent stronger - without ever saying what the baseline was. None of the five publishes a climb height. That is the gap you are walking into when you compare an iRobot against anything else.

Matched replacements, by the Roomba you were looking at

This is the part most roundups skip. A single ranked list is useless if you were about to spend three hundred dollars and the winner costs a thousand. Here is the mapping.

If you were about to buy this Roomba, look at this instead
The RoombaWhat it publishesThe alternativeWhat you gain
Roomba 105 VacNo Pa figure, no climb height, bristle brushRoborock Q7 M5+10,000 Pa, a 20mm climb figure, a named anti-tangle brush and a 99mm body height - usually for less money
Roomba Max 715 Pet30,000 Pa, no climb, no mopDreame X40 UltraA 22mm climb figure, a removable mop pad, a published runtime and a hot washboard dock
Roomba j9+Suction stated only as "powerful", no climbeufy X10 Pro Omni8,000 Pa, a 21mm climb, 12mm mop lift, 173 minutes runtime and the clearance it needs under furniture
Roomba Combo j9+"100 percent stronger" than an unnamed baselineRoborock Qrevo CurvX22,000 Pa, a 40mm double-layer climb, 17mm mop lift and an 80mm body

Every figure in the right-hand columns is sourced on that model's spec sheet. Prices move constantly and render live on the buttons below - we do not quote them in prose.

Read the second column down the table. Four Roombas, and between them one real number. That is not a criticism of how the machines clean, which we have not tested and cannot speak to. It is a statement about what you are allowed to know before you spend.

The three things iRobot still does better

This section exists because the honest answer is not "nothing". If one of these matters to you, the right move is to stay.

  1. The sealed allergen bag. The Roomba Max 715 Pet's AllergenLock bag is rated to 0.7 microns and stated at 90 days. No rival in our registry publishes an equivalent sealed-bag rating. In a house where somebody reacts to dust, emptying a bagless bin by hand undoes a lot of the benefit - see robot vacuums for allergies.
  2. The retracting mop. On the Combo j9+ the pad lifts onto the top of the robot rather than hovering a few millimeters above the carpet. It is the only design here that removes the mop from the floor plane entirely rather than managing the risk, and nobody else sells it.
  3. The service network and the app. We cannot benchmark this and we will not pretend to, but a long-established US support operation is a real consideration for an appliance you expect to own for years. It is also the reason replacement batteries are easier to buy for a Roomba than for most rivals - iRobot lists model-specific packs openly, and two major brands list none at all.

The cheapest honest swap

The entry end is where the gap is widest and the decision easiest. The Roomba 105 Vac runs a bristle main brush, which is the wrong construction for a house with pets - it winds hair into a collar that needs cutting free. The Roborock Q7 M5+ at a similar price runs a named anti-tangle brush with an anti-tangle side brush, publishes 10,000 Pa and a 20mm climb height, and states a seven-week dock interval.

That is more machine and considerably more disclosure for similar money, and it is the single clearest swap on this page. The counter-argument is the brush question in reverse: see rubber vs bristle brushes for why bristles are not useless, just wrong for hair.

How we picked

Criteria first, products second. These are the things we ranked on, stated before anything is recommended.

  • Match the alternative to the specific Roomba, not to Roomba in general. The right replacement for a 105 Vac is not the right replacement for a Combo j9+, and a single ranked list hides that.
  • Rank on published specification, because that is where the gap is widest. iRobot states a real suction figure on one of the five models it sells here and describes the other four as multiples of an unnamed baseline. Almost every rival publishes more.
  • State what iRobot still does better. A page called "alternatives" that cannot name a single reason to stay is an advert, not a recommendation.
  • Only machines we can confirm are on sale. Every pick below was price-checked against the live retail feed before it was listed.
  • No testing claims. We have never handled a Roomba or any of its rivals. See how we pick.

What we did not do: test any of these machines. We do not own one, we do not have a lab, and nothing on this page is written as though we did. The full method.

Roborock Q7 M5+
Top pick

Roborock Q7 M5+

The cheapest self-emptying dock with real mapping

The Q7 M5's LiDAR and anti-tangle hardware, plus the self-emptying dock the plain M5 does not come with — and a stated bag capacity to go with it.

Published specifications

Max climb height
20mm (2cm)Roborock's wording is "2cm climbing ability", with no condition attached.Source: Roborock Q7 M5+ product page — climbing ability (retrieved 2026-09-17)

Stated runtime
Not publishedNot stated on Roborock's product page.
Dock
Auto-empty dock with a 2.7L dust bag, stated at up to 7 weeksRoborock qualifies the interval: "Based on Roborock internal testing. Actual results may vary depending on usage conditions." The Amazon listing title says 7 to 9 weeks.Source: Roborock Q7 M5+ product page — auto-empty dock (retrieved 2026-09-17)

What it does well

  • Self-emptying dock with a stated 2.7L dust bag
  • JawScrapers Comb anti-tangle main brush and an anti-tangle side brush — both ends of the tangle problem
  • 360-degree LiDAR navigation at entry-level money

What it does not

  • Two different intervals for one dock: Roborock says up to 7 weeks based on internal testing, the Amazon listing says 7 to 9 weeks
  • A 20mm climb figure, which is the low end of what makers publish
  • No published mop-lift height or runtime

Who it is for

A shedding household on a budget that wants to stop emptying a bin by hand.

Skip it if

You want the mop washed for you. Roborock describes this dock as auto-empty, not mop-washing, so the pad is still yours to rinse.

Dreame X40 Ultra
Pick 2

Dreame X40 Ultra

Removable mop pads

The mop pads come off entirely rather than just lifting, which is the only version of mop lifting that guarantees a dry carpet.

Published specifications

Max climb height
22mm (0.87in)Stated by Dreame in its own model comparison, not on the product listing.Source: Dreame model comparison — L40 Ultra Gen 2 vs L40s Ultra, obstacle climbing height (retrieved 2026-09-01)
Mop lift
Removable, plus a stated 10.5mm raiseDreame quotes the height difference before and after mop lifting as 10.5mm; the pads can also be dropped at the dock entirely.Source: Dreame model comparison — mop lifting height difference (retrieved 2026-09-01)
Dock
Self-emptying with 158F mop and washboard self-cleaning, auto refillSource: Dreame X40 Ultra dock — manufacturer listing on Amazon.com (retrieved 2026-09-01)

What it does well

  • Mops detach at the dock instead of riding along raised
  • Stated 198 minutes of runtime
  • 12,000 Pa stated peak suction

What it does not

  • 22mm climb is mid-pack and well below the L40s and X50
  • Large dock footprint for the mop-washing hardware

Who it is for

Mixed carpet and hard floor where you want the mop gone, not raised.

Skip it if

Your thresholds are tall. Dreame's own comparison puts this generation's obstacle climbing at 22mm.

Roborock Qrevo CurvX
Pick 3

Roborock Qrevo CurvX

Thick carpet and tall sills in one house

The highest published suction figure here paired with the highest published mop lift, which is the combination a mixed-floor home actually needs.

Published specifications

Max climb height
40mm (1.57in) double-layerRoborock states "1.57 in Max. Double-Layer Threshold Crossing", with the chassis lift engaged.Source: Roborock Qrevo Curv Series page — threshold crossing (retrieved 2026-09-01)
Main brush

Navigation
RetractSense LiDAR with Reactive AI obstacle recognitionRoborock states the turret retracts in tight spaces and that the system recognizes 108 object types.Source: Roborock Qrevo Curv Series page — navigation (retrieved 2026-09-01)
Stated runtime
Not publishedNot stated on the Roborock series page.
Dustbin
Not publishedNot stated on the Roborock series page.

What it does well

  • 17mm mop lift is the highest published figure in this comparison
  • 80mm (3.14in) body clears furniture most flagships cannot
  • Retracting LiDAR turret, so the mast is not the height limit

What it does not

  • 22,000 Pa is a peak figure, not what it sustains across a room
  • Roborock publishes only a double-layer threshold figure for it, not a separate figure for a single vertical sill

Who it is for

Homes with deep carpet in some rooms and hard floors in others, where the mop has to get properly out of the way.

Skip it if

You have no carpet at all. Most of the premium on this model is carpet-specific hardware.

eufy X10 Pro Omni
Pick 4

eufy X10 Pro Omni

The most completely published spec sheet

eufy publishes an obstacle clearance, a mop lift, two runtimes and both tank capacities — more of its own numbers than any other maker here.

Published specifications

Max climb height
21mm (0.83in)eufy publishes this as "Obstacle Clearance Height". Like every stated maximum it assumes a clean square edge.Source: eufy X10 Pro Omni product page — obstacle clearance height (retrieved 2026-09-01)
Main brush

Body height
Needs 130mm (5.12in) of clearance under furnitureeufy publishes this as a minimum height restriction rather than a body height.Source: eufy X10 Pro Omni product page — height restrictions (retrieved 2026-09-01)
Dock
Self-emptying with auto mop washing and drying, 3L self-refilling tankThe robot itself carries an 80ml water tank.Source: eufy X10 Pro Omni product page — station and tanks (retrieved 2026-09-01)

What it does well

  • Publishes an obstacle clearance figure at all, which iRobot and Shark do not
  • 12mm auto-lifting mop with carpet detection
  • Separate stated runtimes for vacuum-only and vacuum-plus-mop

What it does not

  • 21mm clearance is mid-pack and well below the Curv or the L40s
  • 8,000 Pa is modest against the current flagship figures

Who it is for

Anyone who wants to check the specs before buying rather than after the robot arrives.

Skip it if

Your sills are over about 20mm. A published 21mm clearance is honest, but it is not tall.

What we would skip, and why

Skip this one

eufy 11S MAX

It came up constantly as the cheap way out of iRobot, and for a studio with no thresholds it was a perfectly sensible machine - thin, simple, no app required. It is the skip on this page because it was never a Roomba alternative in any meaningful sense: it has no mapping at all, so it cleans in a random bump-and-turn pattern, and replacing a robot that cleaned in rows and remembered your floorplan with one that does neither is a downgrade you would notice daily, whatever it saved. It is also moot as of 2026-10-10 - the listing is dead and only a Renewed one remains, which we do not rank.

Leaving iRobot for a specific reason

  • You want to compare specifications before buying - Roborock or Dreame. Both publish a suction figure for every model they sell; the best Roborock and the best Dreame rank each range internally.
  • Thresholds are the actual problem - Dreame. It publishes a climb height on four of its five current models, and no Roomba publishes one at all. Start at the threshold table.
  • You want a flatter robot - Roborock. Its 80mm flagships are the lowest-profile machines anyone here publishes a figure for; iRobot states a height on one model.
  • Mopping is why you are leaving - the Qrevo CurvX publishes 17mm of lift, the highest on this site. The best mop combos covers the whole field.
  • You want it cheaper, full stop - best budget robot vacuums covers the bottom of the market, where the Roomba 105 Vac is beaten on published specification by several cheaper machines.

Questions people actually ask

+ What is the best alternative to a Roomba?

It depends which Roomba you were buying. For an entry model, the Roborock Q7 M5+ publishes far more and usually costs less. For a flagship Combo j9+, the Roborock Qrevo CurvX publishes 22,000 Pa, a 40mm climb and 17mm of mop lift. The table above matches each Roomba to its closest replacement.

+ Is there a cheaper robot vacuum as good as a Roomba?

On published specification, yes, and at the entry end it is not close - the Roborock Q7 M5+ states a suction figure, a climb height, a body height and an anti-tangle brush where the comparable Roomba states none of those. Whether it cleans better is something neither we nor anyone citing us has tested.

+ Why do Roomba alternatives list bigger suction numbers?

Partly because they publish one at all - iRobot states a Pascal figure on just one of five models here. And partly because there is no shared standard for measuring suction, so every figure comes from that maker's own rig. Treat a Pa number as a rough tier within one brand, not as a score across brands.

+ What does Roomba do that no other brand does?

Three things, concretely. The sealed AllergenLock bag rated to 0.7 microns on the Max models, with no published equivalent elsewhere. The retracting mop on the Combo j9+, which lifts the pad onto the robot's back instead of hovering it. And openly sold model-specific replacement batteries, which two major rivals do not list at all.

+ Should I switch from Roomba to Roborock?

If your reason is that you want to check specifications before spending, yes - Roborock publishes a suction figure for all seven models it sells here. If your reason is allergies and you rely on the sealed bag, no. The full brand-level comparison is Roborock vs Roomba.
