Scratched floors and scuffed baseboards

Two separate worries that get reported as one. The floor damage is caused by grit, and the baseboard damage is caused by the bumper.

A robot vacuum does not scratch a hard floor. Grit carried under one does, in exactly the way grit under a shoe does, which makes running it more often protective rather than risky. Baseboard scuffing is unrelated: that is the bumper, and it is fixed with a no-go zone or a strip of felt.

These arrive as one worry and they are two different mechanisms with two different answers. Separating them is most of the work, because the fix for one does nothing for the other and the advice you find online usually blends them.

The floor: it is the grit, not the machine

A hard floor gets scratched by hard particles dragged across it under pressure. Sand, road grit, cat litter, small stones tracked in on shoes. The robot's own plastic wheels and rubber or bristle brush are softer than a sealed floor finish and do not mark it on their own.

That has a conclusion most people find counterintuitive, and it is the single most useful thing on this page: running the robot more often reduces scratching rather than increasing it. Every hour that grit sits on the floor is an hour it can be trodden in by a shoe carrying eighty kilos, which is a far more aggressive event than a two-kilo robot rolling over it. Frequency is protection.

The place to be careful is the entryway, because that is where the abrasive material arrives. A door mat that actually catches grit does more for a hardwood floor than any choice of robot.

Brush material is the second-order question

Given grit is present, a soft rubber or silicone roller distributes contact across a flexible fin, while a stiff bristle concentrates it into points. On a soft lacquer or an oiled finish that difference is worth having, and it happens to be the same choice you would make for hair. Where a maker publishes the brush material we have recorded it.

The baseboards: that is the bumper

Different problem entirely. To clean the edge of a room a robot has to get close to the wall, and most designs find the wall by touching it — the bumper is a sprung panel with a contact sensor behind it. On painted baseboards, hundreds of light contacts a week leave gray marks, and on soft paint they can eventually mark the surface itself.

Worth being clear that this is a cosmetic problem on paint rather than damage to the wall, and it concentrates in the same few places: the pinch points where the robot approaches at an angle, and any corner it visits repeatedly.

  1. Watch one run and find the spots. Scuffing is never uniform. It is three or four places, and knowing which lets you fix those instead of the whole house.
  2. Wipe the bumper. A bumper carrying a film of gray dust is a bumper that transfers it. This alone resolves a surprising share of reports.
  3. Add a felt or clear strip to the bumper, not to the wall. Self-adhesive felt tape on the leading face is the standard fix, it is reversible, and it does not affect the contact sensor behind it.
  4. Use a no-go zone on the worst corner if one spot is doing most of the damage. You lose the edge clean in that corner and you keep the paint.
  5. Check the app for an edge or wall-follow setting. Some models let you reduce how aggressively they hug the wall, which trades a little edge coverage for less contact.
  6. Touch up with the original paint. On a painted baseboard this is a five-minute job and the marks do not return once the bumper is felted.

Models with an extending side brush or an extending mop reach into the edge without needing to press the body against it as hard, which helps. That is a design characteristic rather than a published specification, so treat it as a reason to look rather than a number to compare.

Furniture legs are the third case

Table and chair legs get the same treatment as baseboards, and on soft wood or a painted leg the marks show sooner. The fix is the same felt tape, applied to the leg rather than the robot, which most people already have on furniture to protect the floor. If you are still choosing

There is no published specification for bumper pressure and none for floor-safety, so this is not a decision that can be made from a spec sheet. What you can shop on is brush material, since that is published, and the three picks below are models whose makers describe theirs in a way that suits a soft finish.

+ Will a robot vacuum scratch my hardwood floor?

Not by itself. Grit carried under it can, exactly as grit under a shoe can. Because a robot removes that grit continuously, running it more often protects the floor rather than putting it at risk.

+ How do I stop a robot vacuum scuffing my baseboards?

Wipe the bumper first, then add self-adhesive felt tape to the bumper's leading face. If one corner is doing most of the damage, put a no-go zone on it. Some models also let you reduce wall-follow aggressiveness in the app.

+ Do rubber brushes damage floors less than bristles?

They spread contact across a flexible fin rather than concentrating it at bristle tips, which is gentler on a soft lacquer when grit is present. It is a second-order effect — the grit matters more than the brush.

+ Why is my robot marking the floor in one specific line?

Check the wheel treads and the caster for a lodged stone or grit. That is the one way a robot marks a floor by itself, and it produces a repeating line rather than random marks.

+ Does a robot vacuum damage furniture legs?

It can leave the same cosmetic marks it leaves on baseboards, on soft or painted wood. Felt pads on the legs fix it, and models with recognition-based obstacle avoidance tend to give legs a wider berth in the first place.
