Most robot vacuums connect only to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and cannot see a 5GHz network at all. If your router broadcasts both bands under one name, the phone doing the setup is probably on 5GHz while the robot cannot find anything. That single cause accounts for the majority of these failures.
This is a networking problem wearing a robot vacuum costume, which is why the troubleshooting steps in the manual so often do not help. Nothing on this page requires opening the machine, and the first three steps cost nothing.
1. The 2.4GHz band — start here
Robot vacuums use 2.4GHz because it travels further through walls and the hardware is cheap, which matters in a device that has to reach the far corner of a house. The trade is that they generally have no 5GHz radio at all. Not a preference — no radio.
Modern routers broadcast 2.4GHz and 5GHz under a single network name and decide which one each device gets. That is called band steering, and it is helpful for phones and actively unhelpful here: your phone runs the setup while sitting on 5GHz, and the robot searching for that same name finds nothing on the band it can hear.
Put the phone on 2.4GHz for the setup. If the bands have separate names, join the 2.4GHz one before opening the app. This alone resolves a large share of failures.
If both bands share a name, split them temporarily. Most router admin pages let you give the 2.4GHz band its own name. Set it up, then put the names back if you prefer — the robot remembers the credentials.
Or disable band steering for the duration of setup, if your router offers that instead.
Move the phone and the robot next to the router while pairing. Pairing is the most fragile moment; you can move both back afterward.
2. The network name and password
Special characters. Some robots handle a limited character set in the network name or password. If yours contains unusual symbols, a temporary guest network with a simple name and password is a quick way to test whether that is the cause.
Hidden networks. Many robots cannot join a network that does not broadcast its name. Unhide it for setup.
Captive portals. A network that shows a sign-in page in a browser cannot be joined by a robot, which has no browser. This is why these machines usually fail on apartment-building or workplace Wi-Fi.
Enterprise security. WPA2-Enterprise, the username-and-password kind, is not supported by consumer robots. WPA2-Personal or WPA3 with a WPA2 fallback is what they expect.
3. The phone, not the robot
Setup apps commonly need location permission, because on both iOS and Android the Wi-Fi scanning that pairing depends on sits behind that permission. Denying it produces a pairing failure that looks exactly like a broken robot. Grant it for setup; you can revisit it afterward.
Also check that the phone is not on a VPN and not on mobile data with Wi-Fi assist quietly switching it over. Both break the local handshake that pairing needs.
If it connects and then keeps dropping off
Different symptom, different causes. A robot that pairs successfully and then goes offline repeatedly is usually a coverage or congestion problem rather than a credentials one.
Check where it drops. If it goes offline in one part of the house, that is a coverage dead spot, not a fault. The robot travels; your phone does not.
Look at 2.4GHz congestion. That band is shared with microwaves, older cordless phones, some baby monitors and every neighboring router. Moving your 2.4GHz network to a less crowded channel in the router settings often fixes chronic dropouts.
Check mesh handoff. In a mesh system a moving robot has to hand off between nodes, and some robots handle that badly. Pinning the robot to one node, where the system allows it, is more stable than letting it roam.
Remember it can clean offline. A dropped connection stops the app reporting; on most models it does not stop a run that has already started. If the floors are getting done, this is an annoyance rather than an emergency.
When to stop troubleshooting
If the robot pairs on a phone hotspot but not on your home network, the robot is fine and the network is the problem — take the diagnosis to the router. If it will not pair on a hotspot either, that is a hardware or firmware fault and it is a support conversation rather than a settings one.
The option nobody mentions: no Wi-Fi at all
Worth saying plainly, because for some people it is the right answer rather than a consolation. Unconnected robots still exist. They have no app, no map and no schedule, and they also have no pairing to fail, no cloud account and no floor plan of your home on anyone's server.
That is a real trade rather than a free win — you lose room selection, no-go zones and resume-after-charge, which are most of what makes a mapped robot useful. But if you are on this page for the third time, or if the connectivity was never the part you wanted, it is worth knowing the category still offers a machine with none of it.
